Nexium Generic Drugs: Esomeprazole
Nexium generic works by abating the amount of acid generated by the stomach. Esomeprazole is one of the two stereo-enantiomers in omeprazole. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that restrains production of gastric acid by specific inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase in the gastric perital cell.
Indications :
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Healing and maintenance of healed erosive oesophagitis, Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with appropriate anti-bacterial regimens.
Dosage :
*Gastroesophageal reflux disease, healing of erosive esophagitis : 20mg or 40mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.
*Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis : 20mg once daily.
*Symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux : 20mg once daily for 4 weeks.
*H.pylori eradication to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence : Esomeprazole 40mg once daily with amoxicillin 1g twice daily and clarithromycin 500mg twice daily for 10 days.
Contraindications : Hypersensitivity
Special precautions : Nursing mothers, pediatric patients, patients with severe liver impairment, a dose of 20mg of esomeprazole should not be exceeded, pregnancy.
Side effects : Headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea flatulence, dry mouth constipation, increased creatin, uric acid, increased or decreased haemoglobin, white blood cell count, platelets, increased bilirubin, alkaline phosphate, ALT, AST, hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, hypernatremia, altered thyroid function tests.
Caution for women planning to become pregnant : Discuss with your doctor the risks of using this medication during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medicine is excreted in breast-milk. Check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Drug interaction : Esomeprazole may interfere with the absorption of drugs where gastric pH is an important determinant of bioavailability eg. Ketoconozole, iron salts and digoxin.
Missed Dose : A missed dose can be taken if remembered, on the same day. But doubling the next dose should be absolutely avoided.
Storage : Room temperature away from sunlight and moisture is ideal to store this drug. As with all medications, this also should be kept out of the reach of pets and children.
